Description

The peaceful city cemetery established in 1821 after Greece's independence is a popular destination to explore, with beautiful neoclassical sculptures, including Yannoulis Chalepas' Sleeping Maiden, one of the most popular Greek sculptors of the modern era. Famous people buried here include the Benaki family, as well as the renowned archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann (1822–90), whose mausoleum is decorated with scenes from the Trojan War. Before this cemetery was established, Greek citizens were obligated to bury their dead at their local church during the period of Ottoman rule.
