Description

Athens' history is encapsulated in one small 12th-century church, dedicated to Agios Eleftherios and Panagia Gorgoepikoos (Virgin Swift to Hear). Marble was used to build a cruciform-style building on the ruins of an ancient structure, with exterior decorations of medieval beasts and ancient gods in bas-relief, and columns from older edifices. Once a cathedral for the city, it now stands in the shadows of the much larger new cathedral.
