Description

In 131 AD, the people of Athens erected a lofty monument of Pentelic marble as a sign of gratitude for the Roman emperor Hadrian, who had a profound fondness for the city. Despite his habit of taking Classical artifacts from Athens to Rome, Hadrian also decorated the city with numerous temples and infrastructure upgrades. The monument still stands today on the edge of one of Athens' most vibrant streets.
