Description

In 334 BC, Lysikrates, a patron of music and a leader of a chorus, built a tower to commemorate the victory of his chorus in the Dionysia's dramatic contests. The tower's pedestal was topped with a bronze tripod as a trophy. This is the earliest known monument to use Corinthian capitals externally, a style which has been imitated in many modern monuments. Reliefs on the tower depict the battle between Dionysos and the Tyrrhenian pirates, who had been transformed by the god into dolphins.
