The magnificent mansion, designed by Christian Hansen from Denmark (a brother of Theophil who is responsible for the Athens Academy building on Panepistimiou street) is home to a city-run gallery. This gallery often features works by Greek artists, but is also host to a rotating selection of temporary exhibits. Metaxourgio, the neighbourhood in which it is located, got its name from the silk factory that once occupied the premises.
