The Parthenon, the largest Doric temple ever completed in Greece, was designed to be the pre-eminent monument of the Acropolis. Taking 15 years to build, the temple, meaning 'virgin's apartment', is dedicated to Athena Parthenos, the goddess embodying the power and prestige of the city, epitomising the glory of Ancient Greece.
