Description

During the 6th century BC, tyrant Peisistratos initiated the Great Dionysia festival, which was held at the world's initial theatre located on the southern slope of Acropolis. This theatre utilized a timber frame and it was an immense crowd that attended the contest where men wearing goatskins sang and danced, subsequently followed by feasting and merrymaking. It was during these contests that drama in its present form came into existence.
