Description

Andronicus, a Macedonian (Greek) astronomer, likely built the beautiful and functional Pentelic marble tower within the Roman Agora in the 2nd century BC. This tower served as an ancient time-and-weather station, as it was aligned with the four cardinal directions and each of its eight sides featured a relief figure representing the wind from that direction. Sundial markings were also visible below the reliefs, and the tower was topped with a weather vane, likely a bronze figure of Triton.
